It is currently summer break here in the PH and for graduating students its GRADUATION RITES season.
I myself am a recent graduate of a 5 year (4 year course if you study in UP) course- OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY.
Ever since I started in college I was always asked "Ano ang course mo" (What is your course) by everyone I know and when I answer OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY 80% of the time they get this look:
I can't really blame people for not knowing about it, it is not as well known as say, nursing. But sometimes I do get bitter that we are so unrecognized, even in the baccalaureate mass the hosts attention was called before they were able to mention our college.
But when I do get to asked to explain, I explain it in a way which I think the people who ask can easily grasp it. I say "Parang PT na may Psych" (It's like Physical Therapy with a psychological aspect" but what I failed to think about was that I was explaining it wrong and I was giving people the wrong impression. I myself have a hard time of explaining what OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY in a nutshell is. There are so many areas, so many fields that I feel I cannot express it in one sentence alone.
It was once described by a revered professor as "Occupational therapy makes people optimally functional" and that is it. We help people reach their potential for occupational participation. As much as possible we maximize their independence and thereby improving self esteem and hopefully quality of life. I know that I am not as adept as explaining the profession as I should be, but forgive me I am after all only a fresh graduate. So in the best way I can I will try showing you, my readers what we do on a daily basis.
We try to provide intervention based on the client's goals. We make them independent or at the most increase their participation in everyday tasks or in the areas of occupation such as Activities of daily Living (Bathing, Dressing, Eating, Feeding, Toileting, Functional Mobility, Instrumental Activities of Daily Living)(Financial Management, Home Management, Child Rearing, Community Mobility) Work, Play, Leisure and Sleep.
ADULT PHYSICAL DYSFUNCTION
In this setting we usually cater to adults who have acquired a disability. Common conditions that we see are: Stroke, Spinal Cord Injuries, Burns, Amputations, Fractures, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Nerve Injuries, Tendon Injuries, Low Back Pain, Arthritis.
PEDIATRICS
We deal with children with behavioral/physical problems. Common conditions encountered are Cerebral Palsy, Autism, ADHD, Global Developmental Delay, Down's Syndrome.
PSYCHIATRIC
We usually conduct group activities in the psych ward. We teach them socially acceptable behaviors through these activities as well as provide for a possible source of income.
GERIATRICS
Usually we deal with improving their quality of life by providing environmental modifications, assistive technology, educating them on work simplification techniques and maintaining current level of function.
I know that these explanations are lacking, but hopefully it has given a brief background on occupational therapy. There are many possible sources on the internet that explain about the history of OT, job descriptions and the like.
For those who are planning to pursue this career don't hesitate to ask questions and I will answer them to the best of my ability. Just post in the comment box below.
Lastly I want to leave everyone the impression that OT is FUN!
There is no justifiable reason for a grown woman to stay in bed for 12 straight hours, not eating, not drinking and not to mention ignoring all her freinds' invites to go out to town except for watching a HEART TUGGING, TEAR DUCT FATIGUING, MIND BOGGLING drama such as BU BU JING XIN (Startling by Each Step). Now, I watched this series about 4-5 months ago when I was a living corpse due to some school related stress and this was HONESTLY the drama that made me push through in the most difficult part of my internship year. It broke the monotony of designing treatments, documenting said treatments, doing evaluations, conducting group activities. It transported me to a world were life was simpler but the problems were in no way less or easier to solve. In fact it made me realize that my problems were nothing compared to that of this girl whose every move is detrimental to her future considering that she was just a tea maid... but I am getting ahead of myself now.
I used to be NO fan of Chinese/Period dramas unless you count that period in my life when there was no cable and I can only choose between watching CHINESE DRAMA or HOME SHOPPING NETWORK (i watched a little bit of both). I do not know why my lola only had these 2 options whenever I stayed with her in PARANAQUE of all laces (much better program choices here in the province) anyhooooo onto the main topic of the day: BU BU JING XIN.
This story in about Ma'ertai Ruo Xi, a typical Manchu girl of high standing ( as I understand her father is a general under the 9 banners) ONLY she isn't typical in the sense that she is actually Zhang Xiao from the year 2011. The story is about her (Ruo Xi) and of her relationships with the princes of the Aisin Gioro. The story is set at the reigns of both KangXi and YongZhen.
The story starts when RuoXi wakes up and she finds that she is the era of KangXi (Qing Dynasty). Turns out some collision transported her 'brain waves' to that era as 13 year old Ma'ertai Ruoxi is falling down the stairs. We follow her life through 35 episodes of political maneuvering, marriage arranging and romancing. There are rumours that there will be a season to and i cross my fingers that they make it SOON please Nicky Wu just sign on already!.
I love this series because of its substance, great acting, great costumes, AND peek into Chinese history. I love anyhting HISTORY so this got me hook line and sinker. The dialogues are good and OH MY! the guys are all so good looking (even with their Qing dynasty hairstyles which at first I was not very fond of) I believed the characters and sympathized with ALL of them (except maybe 9th prince) All the villains have their motivations for doing what they do and you won't go WTF!? at characters actions because you can clearly see where they are coming from. It gets a little dark and a bit frustrating at the end to see Ruo Xi as she discovers the effect her presence has had on history.
I highly encourage that YOU watch this (PLEASE) it is worth the 35 episodes. I personally got through the 35 episodes in 4 days time not sleeping a wink (i'm weird i know, but that's how i get when i like something). I was actually just planning to watch the first episode to pass the time but after watching I was HOOKED. It has a good pilot episode and fans of Pearl Princess might like this.

What's a girl to do when she craves for DESSERTS at 11PM? Why search the internet for dessert places that are still open at 11PM! Only, dessert places are rarely 24 hour businesses so what to do?
GO TO STARBUCKS AND THEN EAT AT SHAKEY'S (the two places that are still open at said time and also both accessible from said girl's location in Sampaloc, Manila.)
After my ordeal with searching for such places I've decided to make a "directory" of places that are still open THAT late at night/ reaaaalllyy early morning ;)
1. NIGHT MARKETS
MIDNIGHT MERCATO
Been to Mercato @ BGC once and to Manda Centrale once (think they have the same organizer) . And both are very nice places to go to IF you live near the area/ drive a car. Actually all these night food markets are really only convenient for those with cars which, maybe,is the target market.
What is Mercato?
From the website:

BANCHETTO
I've actually never been to Banchetto, but like Mercato it is a night market of sorts selling foods, there are booths of food, you get the idea. They have a few locations with the latest opening in Manila Ocean Park!
From the website:
[Banchettowas derived from
the Italian word, which means a “feast.” It is the FIRST OVERNIGHT STREET FOOD
FIESTA held weekly right in the MIDDLE of the Street! Born on February
2006, it is a project commissioned to us by the Ortigas Center Association (OCAI)
and Rotary Club of Ortigas Center (RCOC) with its main purpose is to promote
the Ortigas Center Tourism Council.]
